The First Lady & President Hurwitz Dine at Mozzeria with Alumni

On February 4th, President Hurwitz and First Lady Vicki Hurwitz invited San Francisco Bay Area Gallaudet University alumni to join them at an informal dinner hosted by Russell and Melody Stein at their restaurant the Mozzeria.  The Stein’s opened Mozzeria on December 9th of 2011 with the simplistic goal of creating quality pizza that all – both deaf and hearing – could enjoy.  Gallaudet University alumnus Melody Stein is actually a third generation restaurateur, and both she and Russell are self-taught chefs.  The San Francisco Chronicle hails that the Mozzeria has “already become a beacon for the Bay Area’s close-knit deaf community” and clearly the perfect spot for such an intimate event.

The Bay Area alumni event was a huge success.  Over sixty GU alumni were in attendance and they all gave a warm and gracious welcome to the President and First Lady.  The atmosphere that evening was filled with enthusiasm about the progress of Gallaudet since President Hurwitz took office and excitement about Gallaudet’s future, paired with the best food that the Bay Area has to offer.  The event was best summed up by GU alumni Celia May Baldwin, “It was a royal treat for me!”

The Office of Development would like to extend a special thank you to the Steins for hosting such a memorable event.  The Gallaudet community is encouraged to visit Mozzeria restaurant located at 3228 16th Street (near Guerrero) in San Francisco and support GU alumni Russell and Melody Stein.  You can learn more about Mozzeria by following Melody Stein’s blog at www.mozzeria.com/blog.   You can also go to http://vimeo.com/36463524 to see an exclusive interview with Melody Stein and get a sneak peak at the inside of Mozzeria.
